Sending MIDI from NS2 to Ableton

I have connected my iPhone to a Mac running Ableton Live 10 via a lightning to USB cable. I'm trying to send midi to an Ableton track from NS2. I know my setup is good because I could send MIDI successfully via another iPhone app (Velocity Keyboard). But from NS2 nothing comes through, either from MIDI playback or when I play the NS2 virtual keyboard. I also would like to control the Ableton transport from NS2.

Any ideas?

  • you can send midi notes and cc's from NS to other decice using "External MIDI instrument". Just check you set proper midi out port in instrument setrings.

Nanostudio doesn't send midi clock / MMC at the moment.

  • @Anchoy check out the Setup section near the end of this manual page: https://www.blipinteractive.co.uk/nanostudio2/user-manual/ExtMIDIInstrument.html

Another alternative if you already have the track set up in some other way (e.g. using an Obsidian instrument) and don't want to change it to the External Midi type is to add the Midi Route midi fx from the Midi Tools collection (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/midi-tools/id1446209019).

Having said that I've only sent midi out via a hardware midi interface (old Alesis dock), but I assume that the ipad-to-Mac connection you used for Velocity Keyboard also shows as a Midi device on the ipad?

  • You can sync playback with Ableton Link, but NS won’t use the start/stop functionality so you still have to press play on both separately. After that, they will be in sync, though.

in theory it should work using Audiobus.. just load NS into audiobus, actiave link in AB - after you hit play in Audiobus, it should start both NS and Live
