I wanted to keep the main app download as small as possible so most of the Factory Obsidian patches are deliberately synthesis-based. I clicked with Steve at Platinum Audiolab because he's a similar indie obsessive like me, and he made it his mission to create sound packs which neatly fill the gap for more sample-based patches. We both felt that the choice should be placed in your hands to decide which ones most suit your type of music. The packs aren't just about Obsidian though - there's also a large number of Slate kits, some of which have a very different take on the Factory kits, and all of them come with at least three demo projects.
IAP patches come with Obsidian macro controls already set up to do useful things within the context of the patch. Using IAP content in your project keeps the project much smaller, as it doesn't need to take a copy of the samples.
